About Bharatpur
The Keoladeo National Park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park formerly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, India is a famous avifauna sanctuary that plays host to thousands of birds especially during the winter season. These diverse habitats are home to 366 bird species, 379 floral species, 50 species of fish, 13 species of snakes, 5 species of lizards, 7 amphibian species,7 turtle species, and a variety of other invertebrates. Every year thousands of migratory waterfowl visit the park for wintering breeding etc. The Sanctuary is one of the richest bird areas in the world. It is known for nesting of its resident birds and visiting migratory birds including water birds.
Wildlife Photography related learning during the workshops:
Today's Wildlife Photography is all about action, creativity and uniqueness. The aim of this tour is to ensure on-the-field knowledge sharing & instruction with respect to bird photography enabling participants of this tour to master skills of creative photography and increase in confidence in handling dynamic subjects such as birds.
During the workshop your mentor Sudhir Shivaram will help you master the core principles and concepts of Bird Photography. The sessions will help you to move away from taking images to making images. You will understand the concepts of storytelling images and what it takes to get your images published.
The below topics of photography will be covered and the participants will learn how to use these concepts in Bird photography.
‣Manual and autofocus (focusing points, autofocus lock, single or continuous focus)
‣Manual exposure (ISO, shutter speeds, f/ stops and the light meter)
‣Metering modes (evaluative, matrix, spot metering)
‣Depth of field (shallow, deep, hyper focal distance)
‣Motion (freezing, blurring and panning)
‣Picture styles / picture control (colour, black and white, sepia etc…)
‣Aperture priority, shutter speed priority and program modes
‣Understanding exposure - the 18% concept
‣White balance (pre-set and custom)
‣The temperature of light (natural and artificial colour cast)
‣Composition (framing)
‣Elements of design (seeing v/s looking)
‣Lenses and perspective (the right choice of focal length)
‣Pre-visualization
‣Completing the story
Post-Processing:
During the course of the workshop you will be taken through the fundamentals of image processing and the following topics will be covered:
‣ Colour management policies (colour settings, working space, ICC profiles etc.)
‣ Working with RAW files
‣ Cropping and image editing
‣ Levels, curves, contrast, saturation adjustments
‣ Image sharpening, cloning, dodge and burn
‣ Noise reduction
‣ Advance concepts of targeted adjustments using masking technique
‣ Saving for web/ printing
During the Field Outing:
During the field outing your mentor Sudhir Shivaram will be accompanying / guiding you and helping you make memorable images. Inputs will be provided to help you make the most of the opportunity.
Itinerary
Day 1: Tuesday 24 Dec:
‣Participants of the workshop arrive from various destinations and check-in to Birders-Inn, Bharatpur.
‣Depending on your arrival time, you can do a afternoon photography session in the park.
‣In the evening, the participants meet the mentor Sudhir Shivaram and go through the tips and tricks of Bird photography along with understand the core concepts of photography.
Day 2 to 5, Wednesday to Saturday 25-28 Dec:
‣Breakfast will be ready by 6am. We have good breakfast and enter the park by 6:30am.
‣The hotel is located at the entrance of the sanctuary.
‣Exclusive Cycle Rickshaw for each participant for maximum flexibility and to carry you equipment.
‣We spend the full day (6:30am to 6pm) inside the park photographing the various subjects.
‣We will get hot packed lunch by around 1pm from the hotel.
‣If someone wants to go back to the hotel to take some rest and come back, you are welcome to do that.
‣We exit the park by 6pm.
‣Back in the hotel we refresh and meet to discuss various aspects of bird photography along with reviewing the images photographed during the day.
Day 5 Saturday 28 Dec:
‣We do a morning ride into the sanctuary and checkout by noon.
‣Depending on the departure plans of individuals, you are welcome to spend more time in the park.
Workshop Structure
Before the workshop
‣Registered participants to submit 5 of their images to Sudhir Shivaram.
‣Sudhir will be reviewing the images to understand the participants experience and to identify the areas of improvements.
‣Sudhir will contact each (or a small group) of the participants in a 1-1 session (or small group session) using skype or google hangout to provide them inputs on their images.
‣Each participant will be provided inputs on the fundamental aspects of photography so that they have a fair understanding to make good images during the workshop.
‣All participants will be brought to a level where they can start implementing the skills during the workshop / field outing and not waste time during the workshop to cover the basics.
‣All basic and fundamental doubts will be answered much before the workshop so that further advance learning happens during the workshop.
‣Expectations of what they can get during the photo tour will be set during the 1-1 or group sessions.
During the Workshop
‣Natural History about the location and what subjects to expect and how to shoot them will be shared.
‣Advance custom function setting of the camera will be taught to shoot like a Pro.
‣Fundamentals of post processing will be presented during one of the evening session.
‣Guidance will be provided with areas of improvements during the hands on field outing.
‣During breaks, images will be reviewed and feedback provided.
‣Evenings - more interactions and knowledge sharing on specific genre of Photography designed for the workshop / photo tour.
‣Lots of hands-on-sessions and 1-1 interaction to help individuals learn and get their doubts clarified.
After the workshop
‣Participants will select and submit their top 10 images from the photo tour to Sudhir Shivaram for critiquing.
‣They are encouraged to write a blog / story about their experience on the workshop with photos and submit it to Saevus.
‣If the blog story gets selected, it will be published in India's Premium Wildlife Magazine SaevUs.
‣Photographs of other participants which are shortlisted may be published along with the story.
‣The learning continues during their next photo tour / workshop with Sudhir Shivaram.

Cost includes
‣Exclusive Cycle Rickshaws for each participant.
‣Accommodation in Delux A/C Rooms at Birders Inn.
‣Accommodation, All Meals, National Park Entry, Camera Fees, Mandatory guide fees etc.
‣All costs are ex-Bharatpur. However, at an added cost, we can arrange for transportation.
‣4N / 5 days stay at Birders Inn.
*Any other expenses outside of the above will have to be borne by the individuals.
